History of the Pekingese
The pekingese was the dog of choice for Chinese royalty
as far back as 2000 B.C. They were considered semi-divine by them. One
of the popular myths on how they came into being is the story of the Lion
and the marmoset. This large king lion fell madly in love with a tiny marmoset
monkey. But he lamented that he was too large to be with his one true love.
So a goddess took pity on him and made him as small as the monkey so they
could be together. Their offspring were small with lionlike features. Hence
why they're nicknamed lion dogs. To harm or steal a peke was punishable
by slow death. British troops stormed the summer palace in the opium wars
of 1860 and all the dogs were ordered killed to prevent capture. Five dogs
managed to survive, and were taken to England. And those five dogs are
from which today's pekes are descended.
